If each side of a scalene triangle is doubled, what is the increase % in area?
Answer (1 of 5): The area of the triangle with sides , a, b and c , is (1/2) ab sin C , C being the angle between a and b. If a and b are doubled keeping angle C fixed, side c is also doubled. The area of new triangle is (1/2) 2a * 2b sin C. That is 4 * (1/2) ab sin C , 4 times the area of init...

The area of the triangle with sides , a, b and c , is (1/2) ab sin C , C being the angle between a and b.
If a and b are doubled keeping angle C fixed, side c is also doubled.
The area of new triangle is (1/2) 2a * 2b sin C. That is 4 * (1/2) ab sin C , 4 times the area of initial triangle.
Increase in area is 3 times the initual area .

As I type this, the other two answers both approach the problem using Heron’s formula, to adjust a calculation of the area based on the length of the three sides. This approach, while accurate, is significantly more labor-intensive than is strictly necessary to answer the question.
If you have a plane figure – doesn’t even matter if it’s a triangle, or even a polygon – and you double every linear measurement – in this case, all three sides — then you’ve created a similar figure with linear scale factor of two.
The area of a similar figure scales as the square of the linear scale factor – so for

A triangle with sides 3, 4 and 5 is a scalene triangle, though it a right angled triangle. Its area is 3*4/2 = 6 sq units.
Next double its sides which now become 6, 8 and 10. Its area is 6*8/2 = 24 sq units.
So on doubling the sides of a scalene triangle the area becomes 4-fold or the increase in area is 300%.

Originally Answered: If each side of a scalene triangle is doubled, find the increase % in area?
If a,b,c are the lengths of the original triangle and s is the semi-perimeter, then the area is given by Heron's formula Sq rt (s)(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)
If each side is doubled then we have the side lengths 2a,2b,2c. The semi perimeter will be 2s.
Now the area of the new triangle is Sq rt 2s(2s-2a)(2s-2b)(2s-2c) = Sq rt 2(s)(2)(s-a)2(s-b)2(s-c) = 4 Sq rt (s)(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)
Hence if each side of a scalene triangle is doubled, the area increases by 300%

Let a , b and c are the three sides of a scalene
triangle ABC .
Area of triangle ABC =(1/2)a.b.sinC=(1/2).b.c.sinA=(1/2).c.a.sinB.
If each side is doubled
New area of triangle=(1/2).2a.2b.sinC=(1/2).2b.2c.sinA=(1/2).2c.2a.sinB
Or =2ab.sinC=2b.c.sinA=2ca.sinB
Increase in area=2ab.sinC-1/2.ab.sinC
=(3/2)a.b.sinC
Increase % in area=(3/2)a.b.sinC ×100/(1/2.a.b.sinC

If each side of a triangle is doubled, then by what percent will the area of a triangle increase?
Method 1:
Area of original triangle
A 1 = 1 2 absinθ A1=12absinθ
Area of enlarged triangle
A 2 = 1 2 ⋅2a⋅2bsinθ =4( 1 2 absinθ) =4 A 1
A2=12⋅2a⋅2bsinθ=4(12absinθ)=4A1
% Change in area A 2 − A 1 A 1 ⋅100%= 4 A 1 − A 1 A 1 ×100%=300%
A2−A1A1⋅100%=4A1−A1A1×100%=300%
Method 2:
Using Heron’s formula
[math]beginaligns_1&=dfrac12(a+b+c)\A_1&=sqrts_1(s_1-a)(s_1-b)(s_1-c)\hline s_2&=dfrac12(2a+2b+2c)\&=2cdotleft[dfrac12(a+b+c)right]\&=2s_1\A_2&=sqrts_2(s_2-2a)(s_2-2b)(s_2-2c)\&=sqrt2s_1(2s_1-2a)(2s_1-2b)(2s_1-2c)\&=sqrt{2^4cdot s_1(s_1[/math]

If side of a scaleneis doubled then area would be increased bya)100 %b)50 %c)25 %d)noneCorrect answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?
It's 100 % because all sides in scalene triangle are unequal. so , if all sides doubled it will become 300 % increased,if one side is doubled it will be 100 % increased.
